Splendor by the Sea

← indexNeighborhoodnext →

A short walk away is white, sandy Caspar Beach. Tucked away in a cove, this is the perfect place to bring the kids or "grands" for the day. The gentle slope of the sea here makes it easy to keep your eye on them.caspar-beach-scene.jpg
ice-plant.jpgThis lovely ice plant grows freely in the sand along the beach. Across from the beach is a convenience store.
For the more adventuresome, abalone is available along the shore (in season) for the free-diving among you. A gentle creek flows into the ocean, and back along it's banks you'll discover the site of a old log pond and the remnants of the wooden bridge which once crossed the creek to the Village of Caspar. Hidden on a promontory overlooking the beach and (appropriately) the sea is an old seafarers' cemetery — a great place to explore.sandy-cove.jpg
forget-me-nots.jpgThese little blue flowers — forget-me-nots — grow in profusion along the North Coast and Point Cabrillo Boulevard which leads to Splendor by the Sea.
This arbor of Cypress trees lends a mysterious air to your travels. Some of the sites along this road less traveled....living-arbor-along-pt.jpg
douglas-iris.jpgThese Douglas Iris bloom in the spring on the Cabrillo Preserve — a short walk south from Splendor by the Sea. The 300 acres here are available for walking, birdwatching and whale watching.
lighthouse.jpg
The 100 year history of this picturesque lighthouse is filled with tales of daring-do. Before the light was erected, a number of ships fell prey to the rocky Mendocino Coast. The wreck of the clippership Frolic, which went down in 1850, was declared the "most significant shipwreck on the west coast" by underwater archeologists and has been featured on Discovery TV. Take the one mile round trip walk from the Park entry to the lighthouse or merely take the trail through the Preserve, just a few steps from your home, Splendor by the Sea.
